Tonight's deal is available to the first two individuals to email me at jason@apexdigest.com...
Buy the HC of Unwelcome Bodies by Jennifer Pelland, get a free copy of Apex Digest issue 8 that contains Jen's story "Blood Baby" and a paperback copy of Aegri Somnia that contains one of my favorite Pelland stories, the unheralded "YY."
Neither "Blood Baby" nor "YY" are in Unwelcome Bodies...so this is a great chance for those of you who suffer from Pellanditis to get fix.
Let's sweeten the pot.
I will throw in a copy of Webs of Discord, a chapbook of horror written by none of than ME!
First to buy a HC Aegri Somnia wins all three!
Today, if you're the first to order the HC of Aegri Somnia, then you get a free copy of Scott Nicholson's latest MMPB They Hunger.
Scott Nicholson has a highly praised story in Aegri Somnia titled "Heal Thyself." It should also be noted that you get a signature plate signed by all contributors and the artist.
What are signature plates? They're signed blocks of fancy paper inserted into a book. These are signed by author Lavie Tidhar, Laura Anne Gilman (intro), and Melissa Gay (cover artist). The plates are elaborately designed by Melissa Gay.
So I'm pleased to announce that all future copies of HEBREWPUNK sold through the Apex store will contain a signature plate insert. I only have 150 of these.
#
This got me to checking on the other "signed" materials we have in stock. There are only 61 Aegri Somnia signature plates remaining. We started with 500! The big deal with these are that they have been signed by ALL contributors, including the likes of Cherie Priest, Jennifer Pelland, and Steven Savile.
There are only 27 signature plates remaining for Temple: Incarnations. Which means there are only 27 numbered hardcovers remaining. These are signed by Steven Savile, T.M. Wright, and Judi Davidson.
#
Naturally, this got me to thinking...did not having a signature insert for GRATIA PLACENTI make a difference to you? That is, did you not buy the book due to us not offering a signature plate with the purchase.
The next blog post will be a poll question.
From Jason Sanford's blog:
"The issue features a great science fiction/horror story by Gary A. Braunbeck called "Blackboard Sky," in which Braunbeck channels Arthur C. Clark's Childhood End into the type of horror Clarke couldn't imagine on his most pessimistic of days. Steven Savile follows up the story with a fascinating interview with Braunbeck where they discuss Braunbeck's rather dour worldview (note: Braunbeck avoids calling his worldview pessimistic, instead saying its "more a pragmatic one that been run through a pessimistic filter and then presented to you by a cautious optimist.") The interview also discusses Braunbeck's views on writing and his life, including a horrific event no father should ever endure. This is hands down the best author interview I've read all year and, combined with Braunbeck's story, makes the issue a must read."
The reviewer goes on to cite Pelland's Parting Shot as "hilarious." :) I know...for those who are familiar with Jen's work, "hilarious" is not the word that comes to mind. Trust me and the reviewer on this...it is hilarious.

The magic number is 40. We need 40 more subscribers to make our goal. Seems the drive has lost some steam the past 4 days. I'm starting to worry that we won't even make the little goal of 100. I really really wanted 200 so that we can jump to 3 cents per word. That gets you bumped to the pro-page on Ralans. And it seems to be a sort of benchmark for many writers in terms of respectable pay (for short fiction, at least).
You can take out a subscription right here: http://www.apexbookcompany.com

I wanted to mention that Gratia Placenti comes out in 2 weeks. 2 weeks, folks! Man, time flies. It literally feels like just a couple months ago that Gill and I put the finishing touches on Aegri Somnia.
So, to help you save money, I'd like to remind you that if you order before December 1st, you can get the trade paperback for only $12.95 (it will retail for $15.95...hardcover is $30, but will be worth it).
I was checking out my friend's blog feed and saw a cool post by Angeline Hawkes-Fulbright. She, of course, wrote the wicked story "All Becomes As Wormwood" in Aegri Somnia. She found a new review of the anthology here (opens a PDF). As Angeline points out, the book is still garnering great reviews a year after its release.
You can still get the book via Amazon or through the Apex store.
Have a great Friday!
My favorite part of the review: I enjoyed it so much that I recommended it for a Stoker within hours after putting it down.
Heh, it's like the book is good or something?
"Every story in this anthology stands out as a great work of fiction that each author had poured his or her blood, sweat and tears into its creation. With the outstanding line-up of rich atmospheric tales, Aegri Somnia is an anthology that is sure to capture each and every reader long after the final page is turned. I highly recommend picking up a copy of Aegri Somnia and losing yourself within the nightmares contained within each well imagined page."
Read the entire review at HorrorWorld.com...about halfway down.

Your ol' Managing Editor here blogging from Manchester, KY tonight, waiting for Santa Clause to level his decision on my behavior for the year. Will I receive a rejection notice in the form of a Christmas tree barren of gifts? Or will I be accepted and have stacks of fantastic science fiction and/or horror books waiting for me in the morning?
I received an early Xmas gift from Tangent. Here is their review of Aegri Somnia:

Okay, pardon me while I rant. Lexington has some crap traffic. For a city of approximately 275,000 people, it's rather ridiculous. It's like a mini-Los Angeles, where you drive if you have to go more than two blocks down the street.
So anyways, my current place of employment is off a rather busy street, both going in and out of town. At rush hour and at lunch, it's a literal mad house. The middle finger to driver ratio sits right around 1:1. There's a McDonalds about a half-mile down the street from my job, right off of this busy street. Today, the McDonalds got so backed up that the line for the drive-thru spilled out into the street and ended at a busy four-way intersection! I mean, is getting a Big Mac *that* important to risk your worthless life? It certainly isn't worth risking the lives of others.
You know, there are other options. There's even another McDonalds that is only about a mile down the road the other ways. Bunch of maroons!
Okay, end of rant.

####
There was a girl in the back seat wearing some kind of sci-fi helmet with a dark glass panel over the eyes.
“Hey,” said the girl, her voice muffled by the helmet.
Sammi put her plastic bag on the floor and slid into the leather seat. She remembered once when that red-headed kid, Ryan or whatever, had shown up at school wearing plastic armor for some movie his dad had co-produced (he was the first one they’d found, head smashed through a porthole in the galley, but they couldn’t pull him out or the air would have all gone out—they were higher than they were supposed to be, the stewardess said, and the pilots had stopped answering from behind their locked door).
Sammi asked the girl, “Are you a...clone?” Was that right?
The girl pulled the mask off and shook out her hair. She was a younger version of Tricia, but her smile was a lot more relaxed.
“It’s a welding mask,” she said. “Mine’s into tools and stuff.”
Sammi didn’t know what the girl meant. She shrugged with her good shoulder.
“My guy,” the girl continued. “Like yours is into airplanes, right? That’s a new one on me. Is he a Rasputin or a Supernatural?”
The car was already moving. Tricia spoke from the driver’s seat. “I’m sorry, my daughter can be very rude. Let’s give Samantha a little time, Lynne.”
The girl made a face at the back of Tricia’s head.
“Sorry,” she said. “I thought Mom said you were a legacy, like me.” Lynne patted the helmet on the seat beside her. “First time old Handyman expressed, it fucked my world up, too.
“Not that I took much in the way of physical damage, of course.” She frowned and looked Sammi up and down. “Most girls don’t.”

Scrabbling. Under my head.
I sit bolt upright, palming the drool from my face, and look about wildly.
Where's the scrabbling coming from? Why am I on the floor?
Oh God, it's getting dark.
"Tommy?" No. He doesn't answer to that yet. "Billy?"
Nothing.
I try to get up, but crash back down to the floor, clawing at the rough boards and waiting for the stars to clear. I was so careful with my dosages. I shouldn't be this far gone yet.
I have to find him.
Slowly, carefully, I lever myself from the floor and look around. I smell fresh air.
The back door.
As I stagger for it, I hear the scrabbling again, directly under the floor boards. I stomp my booted heel hard. "Stop it!"
They fall silent, but I know it won't be for long.
The door is wide open, of course.
Shit.
"Billy?"
Pelland, she worries me. :)
