I Remember the Future: The Award-Nominat

Starting the first week of June, we are finally going forward with our plan to make Apex Online a weekly publication. Each week we will bring you a short story, interviews, essays, and other types of features.

We are now accepting reprint submissions for Apex Online. Payment will be a free paperback book of your choice from our store or a free four-issue subscription to Apex Digest. Max word length is 10,000. We ask for non-exclusive e-rights for at least two years.

We’re also interested in receiving pitches for non-fiction content such as interviews, essays, etc. Payment for non-fiction content will be a free back issue of Apex Digest.

I Remember the Future: The Award-Nominat
On the heels of announcing Paul Jessup’s new limited edition book to be released by Apex Publications, we have added a new story titled “Light Like Knives Dragged Across the Skin” to Apex Online.

”Light Like Knives Dragged Across the Skin” is a great example of Paul’s ability to mix macabre and surreal images into a story powered by strong characterization.

 Enjoy!

I Remember the Future: The Award-Nominat
Apex Online December has been posted. This month's featured writer is Fran Friel! She contributes the creepy story "Under the Dryer." And yes, this is our second story with terror centered around the laundry room. And in an Apex exclusive, we have the first chapter of Cherie Priest's fabulous novel NOT FLESH NOR FEATHERS available. Our hope (and Cherie's) is that you'll read the first chapter and then go out and buy the book! :)

We also have seven new book reviews...see who gets alien head and who doesn't.

#

I need to mention that submissions are now officially closed for Apex Digest. In fact, we're closed for the whole month of December.

#

I've started a new I/T job that limits my internet access during the day. This means I'll have to do all my correspondence on the weekends. So don't be offended if you send me an email and it takes me a few days to respond.

Call for Apex Online book reviewer

  • Oct. 26th, 2007 at 11:42 PM
I Remember the Future: The Award-Nominat
Apex Publications has need for a part-time book reviewer.

Any interested candidate must have the ability to put together a coherent review. They must feel comfortable doling out alien heads.

Expectations:
One book review a month as assigned by Ye Editor-In-Chief. The reviewer will be free to review whatever else they want as long as it is germane to Apex Online. You should be a fan of the small press, as many of the books come for those of us doing it "For the Love."

Payment:
Subscription to Apex Digest if you meet the monthly deadlines and the reviews are satisfactory.
One Mason jar of Harlan County slurry water per month (yes, you will be expected to drink it).

Interested parties should email me at jason@apexdigest.com. If you have samples of your work available, those'd be handy to see, as well.

Apex Online v3.01
I Remember the Future: The Award-Nominat
A few nights ago, I finished The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon. I was drawn to the book by a slew of reviews calling it a flawed classic. And I've always heard great things about The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.

Those reviews calling TYPU a "flawed classic" are right on target.

This is the type of visionary storytelling that makes science fiction so unique. The plot, at its highest level, is about a Yiddish detective who investigates the murder of a John Doe that occurred just downstairs from the detective's hotel room.

Oh, but it is so much more than that. TYPU is a triumph of world-building. A blend of characters that will leave their imprints in your memory.

The "flaws" of the novel are its basic point A to point B plot. There's no real mystery, and no 'ah-ha' moment when the reader figures out the killer. It's also a bit heavy on the saccharine metaphors, no doubt a nod to pulp-mysteries of old.

After a slightly disappointing experience with The Road, I was pleased with The Yiddish Policeman's Union. Expect a full review next month when the new issue of Apex Online comes out.

Yes, there's a part at the bottom where I bum for a buck, but hey, a guy has to pay the electric bills, right?

Apex Digest Issue 10 cover - Unveiled!

  • Jun. 1st, 2007 at 10:54 PM
Apex Digest Issue 10
Behold.

Had a few people email wondering where all the content has been...as you probably have noticed, we have had a busy couple of months. I'm trying to get ahead of the game a bit so that I can get our published books out to reviewers a month or two before they're released. Also, to allow the pre-order period to last longer.

The other reason is that much of the former content posted to the blog now goes to Apex Online. Tomorrow will be our latest issue. There's three stories, two interviews, and four reviews. Phew!
